Oude Libertas Amphitheatre
The Oude Libertas winery is one of the oldest wineries in South Africa and houses the oldest and most established and picturesque amphitheatre in Stellenbosch. The open-air amphitheatre was opened in 1977 by the world renowned Russian pianist and conductor Vladimir Ashkenazy.
The mostly Spanish architecture of the theatre, inspired by the Tarragon Amphitheatre in Spain and the Veakion Amphitheatre in Piraeus, Greece, adds to the splendorous setting. Over the past 32 years the Oude Libertas Amphitheatre has become the home of the stars under the stars, with a wide variety of artists performing annually during the summer season.
The intimacy of the beautifully situated theatre provides a suitable stage for various art forms. The best of South African talent and productions are showcased during the performance season. The magnificent view of the Stellenbosch mountain range and vineyards, the charming old trees and picturesque gardens, form a unique paradise for picnic lovers and visitors and provide a destination for all art and music lovers.
You are invited to join again the summer audiences who relish the delights of a unique season of top entertainment under the stars in the Stellenbosch original theatre in the Winelands. Music, theatre and dance once again find a perfect setting under Stellenbosch’s southern sky. Set among tall, rustling trees, the famous open-air Oude Libertas Amphitheatre this year hosts a top line-up of performers in a variety of presentations.
