Somerset Mall
Launch Phase
In 1993, local newspapers in the Helderberg region carried momentous news. AECI to build shopping giant, the headlines read. Building operations commenced on the 58-hectare sitesituated at the intersection of the N2 and the R44 linking Strand, Somerset West and Stellenbosch. Phase 1 of the R150 million project was anchored by one food major, two fashion majors and a 1000-seat cinema complex. 90 upmarket line stores completed the mix and Somerset Mall opened to public acclaim.
Phase 2
In response to research findings, in 1999, Somerset Mall realised that the time was ripe to initiate Phase 2 of the project.
The Centre was expanded from 35 000 m² to 56 000 m² bringing the total value of the Mall up to R300 million. A trolley-load of new stores, including Game and Stuttafords, joined the tenant mix and an additional 3 000 parking bays were built to accommodate the anticipated surge of new customers coming to browse through the strong fashion presence Phase 2 brought with it. The extension opened its doors in August 2000, increasing the total number of retail outlets to more than 160.
Phase 3
The third, and latest, extension unfolded its magnificent wings in November 2004. The need for this extension came from a desire in the community for more family entertainment. Somerset Mall obliged with a 15,000 m² Phase 3 extension that cost R160 million. Somerset Mall offers favourites such as Exclusive Books, Music Moods and Incredible Connection - plus an international food court, ten-pin bowling alley and a Ster Kinekor cinema which has eight movie theatres. An additional 1,200 parking bays were also provided for new customers.
