The magnificent floodlit memorial to Cecil John Rhodes, stands on the slopes of Devil’s Peak, on the Northern flank of Table Mountain. It was built in 1912 on the very place where Rhodes used to sit and contemplate his future. It was a short ride on horseback from his town home – Groote Schuur – (from which the famous hospital takes it’s name) - which is now separated by the M3 Rhodes Drive motorway.
From the 17th to the 20th centuries, Robben Island served as a place of banishment, isolation and imprisonment. Today it is a World Heritage Site and museum, a poignant reminder to the newly democratic South Africa of the price paid for freedom.
Regarded by many as the most breathtaking public swimming pool in the world, the Sea Point Pool complex consists of an Olympic size pool, plus 2 splash pools for kids, and a fully equipped springboard diving pool. Built on the beachfront, these filtered seawater pools are part of the scenic Sea Point Pavilion. Although the pools are not heated, the facility is open throughout the year, and a handful of Capetonians persist with their training at the Pavilion through Winter, when water temperatures drop to about 12 degrees Celsius.
The South African Air Force Museum at Ysterplaat airbase is a must for any flying enthusiast. Exhibits include a history of aviation in South Africa, examples of military aircraft and uniforms. Entrance is free.

SAAO's Cape Town headquarters, on the site of the former Royal Observatory (1828-1971) includes offices, the main library, computing facilities, engineering workshops and historic telescopes.
Members of the public are welcome to visit the SAAO in Cape Town on the second and fourth Saturday of every month at 20H00. The gates will be open and visitors should park near the Main Building; then make their way to the Auditorium for a 45-minute presentation. The topic of the talk is advertised on the SAAO homepage.
